On the occasion of the release of the book Spellbound by Skira Editions, Lee Bauwens Gallery is hosting the Italian artist Paola Pezzi (b. 1963) for her third solo exhibition at the gallery.

For this exhibition, the visual artist presents (re)creative constructions featuring some unpublished pieces that evoke the primitive and spontaneous gestures of hypothetical children's games, returning to the origin of it all. Steel brushes, polyurethane, cotton swabs, wood, felt, and rubber all play a part!

The sculptures are born like sprouts…
Neither natural nor artificial, neither spontaneous nor constructed, Paola Pezzi's works merge opposite attitudes to produce a third, closer to a form of personalization of the gesture, spontaneous because it belongs to her poetic, intimate language, and at the same time works of patient work and invention. There is like an echo of spontaneous, rebellious energy, of creation in its primary, almost uncontaminated state, which in the sculptures is then organised, defined, composed, assembled...(1)

Born in Brescia, Paola Pezzi currently resides and works in Milan. She received her training at the Accademia di Brera in the same city, where she studied under the guidance of two master sculptors, Luciano Fabro and Zeno Birolli. Infused with their innovative quest, which foreshadowed plastic revolutions, known as Arte Povera, Paola Pezzi explores materiality in a highly personal manner, taming contemporary materials and everyday relics of our time.

“I am unable to trace a specific moment to mark the beginning of my artistic adventure because, in reality, the work, all the works are a journey of my life: an attitude driven by necessity. Existential energy is at the base as well as my research: the idea of the original nucleus that comes from the earth remains the root-matrix of my work, which evolves over time, acquiring new energies and materials captured according to the needs of the work. A continuous, dynamic flow, where life enters art and takes shape by becoming lived life, a reflection on the world, dialoguing with it when leaving the studio. I conceive the changeability and continuous transformation of things, as in nature, a new vision aimed at creating something that did not exist before.”(2)
